Lab-Grown Diamonds
Lab-grown diamonds are known for their beauty, radiant sparkle, and verifiable origin. Learn more about lab-grown diamonds’ impact, benefits, and why this sustainable choice is right for you.
The world of diamonds has expanded with the introduction of lab-grown diamonds, sparking a debate about their authenticity and value. Lab-grown diamonds are created in a controlled environment with advanced technology, offering an alternative to naturally occurring diamonds.
What is a lab-grown diamond?
Lab-grown diamonds, also known as created or man-made diamonds, are created in a laboratory setting, free from the negative environmental and social impacts associated with mining. Lab-grown diamonds are identical to mined diamonds; the only difference is their point of origin.
Lab-grown diamonds undergo an identical growth process. Carbon atoms are subjected to high temperatures and pressure, enabling them to bond and form a crystalline lattice structure. These diamonds are then cut and polished, unveiling their brilliance.
How are lab-grown diamonds grown?
Lab-created diamonds are not imitations or synthetic substitutes; they are chemically and structurally identical to natural diamonds. These diamonds are created using two primary methods: high pressure-high temperature (HPHT) and chemical vapour deposition (CVD).
In the HPHT method, a diamond seed is exposed to extreme pressure and high temperature, replicating the natural conditions under which diamonds form deep within the earth. Through this process, carbon atoms bond together, gradually growing a genuine diamond crystal.
CVD involves a diamond seed placed in a vacuum chamber, where carbon-rich gases are introduced. By applying energy, such as microwaves or plasma, the carbon atoms separate and settle onto the seed, layer by layer, resulting in the growth of a diamond. The scientific process involved in creating lab-grown diamonds produces gems that possess the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as natural diamonds.
Why are lab-grown diamonds so desirable?
Identical Composition
Lab-grown diamonds are made of pure carbon, just like natural diamonds. They have the same crystal structure, hardness, and durability. In fact, even gemological experts require specialised equipment to distinguish between lab-grown and mined diamonds.
Ethical and Sustainable
One significant advantage of lab-grown diamonds is their ethical and sustainable nature. They are created in a controlled environment, reducing the environmental impact associated with mining. Lab-grown diamonds offer a responsible alternative for those seeking to make an eco-friendly choice without compromising on quality or beauty.
Affordability and Value
Lab-grown diamonds often come at a more affordable price point compared to mined diamonds. This affordability allows individuals to choose larger or higher-quality lab-grown diamonds within their budget. Additionally, the value of lab-grown diamonds is recognised and appreciated, making them a smart investment choice.
Variety of Options
Lab-grown diamonds offer a vast array of options in terms of size, colour, and clarity. They can be produced in a shorter timeframe compared to the geological process that forms natural diamonds, allowing for a wider range of choices to suit individual preferences.
Beauty and Brilliance
Lab-grown diamonds possess the same breathtaking beauty and brilliance as natural diamonds. They exhibit exceptional sparkle, fire, and scintillation, captivating the eye and radiating elegance. Whether it's for an engagement ring, a pendant, or earrings, lab-grown diamonds dazzle with their undeniable allure.
